How to Clear a Container at the Freeport of Monrovia

Technical Guide | Lealie Enterprise Logistics Team

Containerized cargo represents the majority of imports through the Freeport of Monrovia. Unlike break-bulk cargo, containers come with specific handling protocols governed by APM Terminals. Understanding these nuances is essential for minimizing storage costs and avoiding terminal delays.

The Container Discharge Process

Once your container is discharged from the vessel, it is moved to a temporary storage area. From this moment, the "storage clock" starts ticking. Most shipping lines offer a limited number of "demurrage-free" days, after which significant daily fees apply.

Physical Inspection (DI vs PSI)

If your cargo did not undergo a Pre-Shipment Inspection (PSI) in its country of origin, it must undergo a Destination Inspection (DI) at the port. This involves the 100% physical examination of the container's contents by LRA customs officers and terminal staff.

Terminal Release Note

After your customs duties are paid and the LRA has issued a release, you must settle the terminal handling charges with APM Terminals. Upon payment, you will receive a Terminal Release Note, which is the final authorization required to load the container onto a truck.

Container Tracking Tip

Use our Live Tracking Tool to monitor the arrival of your vessel. Knowing the exact moment of discharge allows your agent to start the physical handling process immediately.

Efficient container clearing requires precision timing. At Lealie Enterprise Inc, we have dedicated field agents on-site at the Freeport to move your cargo through each terminal phase without unnecessary delay.
